STEP parental training

Strengthening strengths in the family

The challenges of bringing up children in today’s world are a frequently discussed and emotionally charged topic – within families, amongst friends, amongst educational teams (nurseries, schools, child welfare services), amongst therapists, at specialist conferences and in the media.
Parents and educational professionals want the best for children, yet often feel uncertain, overwhelmed or stressed in the process.

Practical experience shows that neither an authoritarian nor an anti-authoritarian parenting style meets today’s societal demands. Parents and carers often switch between these two approaches, which they usually recognise from their own childhoods. As a result, children’s problematic behaviour can be unintentionally reinforced by adults’ reactions – a self-perpetuating cycle. This raises the question of whether there is another way.

The STEP educational approach is aimed at everyone involved in the upbringing of children – parents, nursery staff, teachers and professionals working in child welfare services. It sets out the principles of democratic education as a response to today’s challenges and can be used both preventatively and as an intervention.

A central element of the approach is the recognition of parents (or other carers) and children as equal human beings, as well as the right and responsibility of all those involved to show mutual respect.

STEP, the Systematic Training Programme for Parents and Teachers, is a holistic, scientifically evaluated educational approach that enables everyone involved in a child’s upbringing to provide children and young people with guidance and support, and to accompany them through life with respect, appreciation and a healthy sense of calm.

The STEP programme provides support both as a preventative measure for parenting issues and for more serious parenting problems. It is based on individual psychology (Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs) and humanistic psychology.

The STEP programme’s courses, which are tailored to specific target groups, practice-oriented and designed to have a lasting impact, help to ensure that

  • reliable family bonds are formed and daily interactions are characterised by mutual respect, love and appreciation
  • everyday life in nursery, school or educational support settings is organised in a respectful and professional manner
  • successful partnerships in child-rearing and education are established in nursery, school or educational support settings
  • stress in everyday family and working life is reduced – with a view to promoting health.
